Kindergarten/Prekindergarten Information Night

 Parents/Guardians of children entering Kindergarten and/or Pre-Kindergarten in the fall of 2019 are invited to attend this informational meeting.  At the meeting, you will:

         learn about early education in Watertown

        find out when to register your child

        learn how to register your child for school

        ask questions about early education and registration

        hear how we are piloting a new kindergarten registration system!

STUDENT REGISTRATION

Parents of elementary students who are new to the Watertown Schools will need to visit the new Registrar's Office, located in

the Phillips Building at 30 Common St (second floor, Room 205). All students who are registering should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and need to provide:

1) a birth certificate

2) school records or report cards (if records from their previous school were not already transferred)

3) 2 documents of proof of residency (one must be a lease or mortgage document and the other can be a utility bill)

4) completed Registration Forms

5) complete health records indicating all required immunizations were received. These immunizations are a

requirement of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and must be received before the student

may attend school or be enrolled.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING SCHOOL

All students entering school must provide a copy of the following information from the pediatrician's office to the school nurse prior to starting school. Any student without the following documentation will be excluded from school due to non-compliance with Massachusetts state law.

Physicals:

All students must submit a signed physical examination performed by a health care practitioner. The physical must be conducted within the past 12 months of September for Preschool, PreKindergarten, Kindergarted, 4th grade, 7th grade, and 10th grade. Please provide a copy of a current physical to the school nurse.

Immunizations:

The following immunizations are required for all students for 2016-17 school year. Documentation of date, month, and year from physician must be provided.

Preschool and PreKindergarten:

Ÿ 1-4 doses of Hib
Ÿ 4 doses of DTap/DTP vaccine
Ÿ 3 doses of Polio vaccine
Ÿ 1 dose of MMR vaccine
Ÿ 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine
1 dose of Varicella vaccine or a physician-certified reliable history of chickenpox disease
Ÿ 1 Lead Screen with result

Kindergarten-6th Grade:

5 doses of DTap/DTP vaccine
Ÿ 4 doses of Polio vaccine
Ÿ 2 doses of MMR vaccine
Ÿ 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine
Ÿ 2 doses of Varicella vaccine or a physician-certified reliable history of chickenpox disease

7th-12th Grade:

In addition to the required vaccinations for entering Kindergarten, the following immunizations are required for all students entering 7th grade:

Ÿ 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine (recommended but not required)

WATERTOWN HIGH SCHOOL

All Freshmen students will report to the high school auditorium at 8:30am on Tuesday, September 4 and to their Advisory at 8:30am on Wednesday, September 5.

Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 will report to the high school auditorium at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 4 and to their 3rd period class at 10:30am on Wednesday, September 5.

Thursday and Friday will be full school days for all students with dismissal at 3:05 p.m. If a student has
scheduling questions, Guidance Counselors are available by appointment (call 617-926-7736) to assist you.

WATERTOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grades 6, 7, and 8 students will report to school on Tuesday, September 4. Students begin class at 8:30 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:00 p.m.

 

CUNNIFF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in Grades 1 to 5 at the Cunniff School report to school on Tuesday, September 4 at 8:15 a.m. Dismissal is at 2:30 p.m.

 

On Tuesday, September 54 Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten students participate in assigned small group visits. Appointment letters were sent out in June.
Wednesday, September 5: 8:15 a.m. arrival to 12:00 p.m. Lunch served. Extended Day is not available on this day.
Thursday, September 6: 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 pm. Children will experience a full day of school. The Extended Day Program begins.
Friday, September 7: 8:15 -2:30 pm. This is also a full day of school with Extended Day.

HOSMER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in Grades 1 to 5 at the Hosmer School report to school on Tuesday September 4 at 8:15 a.m. Dismissal is at 2:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, September 4, Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten teachers meet with parents and children according to
appointments assigned to each child in their placement letter.

Pre-K and Kindergarten classes begin on Wednesday, September 5, according to the following schedule.

Wednesday, September 5: 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Lunch served
Thursday, September 6: 8:15 a.m. arrival to 2:30 p.m. dismissal. Extended Day programs and transportation begin for registered students.
Friday, September 7: 8:15 a.m. arrival and 2:30 p.m. dismissal.

LOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in Grades 1 to 5 at the Lowell School report to school on Tuesday, September 4 at 8:15 a.m. Dismissal is at 2:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, September 4, Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten students participate in assigned small group visits. Appointment letters were sent out in June.
Wednesday, September 5: 8:15 a.m. arrival to 12:00 p.m. Lunch served. Extended Day is not available on this day.

WATERTOWN PUBLIC SCHOOLS PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

On Tuesday, September 4, Early Steps Integrated Preschool Teachers visiting times: 9:00a.m. - 10:00a.m. at the Hosmer for all students and from 10:00a.m. - 11:00a.m. at the Phillips for all students. Preschool sessions based on your child's assignment will begin on Wednesday, September 5.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH PROGRAM

The School Breakfast/Lunch Program for both the elementary and secondary students begins at all schools on Tuesday, September 4, which is the first day of school. A full lunch will be available. Lunch prices are:

WATERTOWN COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Before and After School Programs for Grades 1-5 at the Cunniff, Hosmer, and Lowell Elementary Schools begin on

Wednesday, September 7. Before School Programs start at 7:15 a.m. and Extended Day Programs start at the close of the

school day. Pre-K/Kindergarten Before and After School Programs begin on Friday, September 9. For further

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION

School bus transportation is available for Hosmer School and Watertown Middle School students only. To be eligible for

transportation, students must live a walking distance of 0.75 or more miles from their school. Parents of eligible students requiring transportation must register for the bus through the school district's Business Office. Follow this link for more information.

Students attending Minuteman Technical High School will receive a bus registration form over the summer. There is no charge for the Minuteman bus, but students are required to register for the bus through the WPS Business Office. Unregistered students will not be permitted to ride the bus to Minuteman.

MBTA STUDENT BUS PASSES

High School and Middle School students who use the MBTA may sign up for a Student CharlieCard to ride at a reduced far. There are two types of Student CharlieCards available: the Unlimited Pass and the Pay-As-You-Go Card. These can be obtained through the school district's Business Office; follow this link for more information.

WALKING TO/FROM SCHOOL AND DROP OFFS

Road construction in some areas of the town may require children to adapt to changing local traffic patterns. Parents

should review the walking route to school with their child before the start of school and whenever road construction

projects change the walking route. Please observe the changes to traffic patterns which the Watertown Police Department

and the School Department post.

NO SMOKING ORDINANCE

The Watertown Town Council passed a Public Health Ordinance regarding no smoking in public buildings in the town.

Students were never permitted to smoke in school buildings. They are now advised that there is a fine for noncompliance

with the no smoking ordinance.

The following is a schedule of fees and general information for the 2018-2019 school year programs as voted by the Watertown School

Committee. Specific details for each program will be distributed to students and parents in conjunction with registration

for participation. All fees must be paid by check or money order and made payable to "Watertown Public Schools";.

WHS Activity Fee: All students are also asked to pay $15/year in class dues with a $5/year late charge, to support the activities of their respective classes.

WHS Athletics:

The annual fees for students participating in high school athletics is:
$200 for the first sport, $175 for the second sport and no charge for the third sport.
For high school students receiving reduced meal benefits, the cost is $100 for the first sport, $100 for the second sport and no charge for the third sport.
Middle School students who play on the high school team through a middle school waiver will pay Middle School athletic fees.
The fee is due at the start of the sport as part of registratio.
